I am looking at a 2004 softail standard. The owner said that he put screaming eagle slip on's on the bike when he got it new. He has almost 5,000 miles on it but never did the stage 1. It is the carburated version. Is there a possibility that there was anything negative done internally to the engine? Anything special to look for on a 2004 model?
Nope, no harm done. The electronic ignition is more forgiving on the carb model. I did the very same thing on my '04 Standard and it ran just fine. Later changed to a set of Hard Krome Double D's.
Apparently he changed the seat, added a sissey bar and a windshield. All of which I can remove if I don't like it. Not sure yet if he has the originals.
What typically needs to be done or should be expected with 5,00 miles?
5,000 service is due. I think he should do the service instead of selling it to someone who will then have to pay (if u choose) to have it done. You don't buy a car that needs an oil change and other service related stuff due---unless you negotiate on the price in your favor to make up for the money you will have to spend as you roll off with it..............but if the price is good for you; go for it
Totally understood. Thanks for the response. Is a 5000 mile service expensive? Anything special? I am kind of comparing this softail standard to a police road king.
Any other points or opinions willl be greatly apppreciated. I have not been into bikes for a long time.
I don't know the price of the 5K service. I wont be going to HD to have mine done; because I can have it done cheaper at my mechanic who is an authorized HD mechanic....those are two totally different bikes. Ride them both and inspect the maintenace records. Also find a small shop to look them over for you. I'm sure you have a shop there like we have here that will pull it in, look it over, listen to it, etc. I say small shop only because we have a few of them here with great reputations and are normally mechanics who left the HD dealership and have a great following.
