Default '10 Fatboy backrest install question

I picked up a rigid mount sissy bar backrest/rack for my fatty. there is a reflector between the last two strut bolts. Using the existing bolts, do I just install over or do I have to remove the reflector?

If the reflector is removed does having the rigid plate bolted directly against the bike do any damage (scratches) to the strut?

Am I better off just picking up detachable plates and the hardware to mount them?

Without actually seeing your bike to know exactly what you're talking about, I would say the reflector would have to come off. Once the rigid sideplates are bolted down tight they shouldn't cause any damage to the struts.

yes, the reflector needs to be removed, it's on there with double sided tape so a little heat on it and it should come right off. The side plates should come with a protective piece of tape to put in between the strut and plate. I started with the rigid mounts and shortly after exchanged for the detachable plates. liked the easy on and easy off of the backrest, most of the time I ride without a backrest, only when she rides do I put it on. so the detachable is more convenient.

Here is a pic of the struts reflector

If I go with the detachable plates and hardware do the reflectors still need to be removed?

Should I use some clear plastic packing tape as a barrier between the plate and strut?

I'm using this backrest/rack mainly for a place to strap a small bag... for rain coat etc...

I think you want those plates as close to the strut as possible, I would imagine they would crack after a few uses of the backrest on anyway. most new bike owners take the reflectors off the forks and struts before they get the first 50 miles on

Dump the reflectors. That is how it is done. Fishing line and goo gone.
