Default Heritage passing lights blow out?

My 2002 heritage passing light didn't work and i took it to the dealer. They fixed it, said it was a bad hi/low headlight switch. It worked good for a couple of weeks and then the left bulb blew out. I took it out to replace it and it was a H3 55 watt bulb. My book says it should be H3 35 watts and it also says 35 watt max on the reflector. The dealer says they never use 35 watt bulbs. So i bought 2 55 watt bulbs so both passing lights will be 55 watts and not one 35 and one 55. I went for a long ride and when i got back i checked my lights and none of them work, blown fuse.

What size is right for a 02 heritage Passing bulb?

Why do they call them passing lights anyway, i'm just suppose to use them when the low beam is on and i'm passing? doesn't make sense to me. I just leave them on all the time to be more visable.

I don't have an answer for this, but I've got a similar problem with an new passing light install on my 06 Springer. Had the dealer install new set of lamps, they blew but my head lamp worked. Took the ride back in and had them fix the problem (or so I thought). Got the damn bike home and neither passing lamps or headlamp are working. I just called the dealer with a WTF is going on here. Is anyone aware of issues with HD passing lamps and fubared wiring?

mine blew out 2x on my 05. switched the bulbs to the type you only need to but a small bulb, not the whole piece. so far so good.

I believe that our low beam headlight are 55 watts. If you are also running two more 55 watt bulbs on that same fuse which is 15 amps, you are now up to a total of 13.75 amps and that doesn't leave much room for anything else. If I were you I would try to get the passing lights on a different circuit or put them back to 35 watt bulbs.

I had the two stock passing lamp bulbs blow out within three months of purchase of my '06 FLSTCI. I purchased new lamps from HD and replaced. They blew out within three months. I went to the local auto store and purchase sylvania lamps (direct replacement) and installed. No problems yet. I noticed the stock lamps where GE. Thought changing brand might help. I agree with roughneck, 55 watts times 2 is two much for the circuit. Purchase H3 35 watt and install yourself. Simple job with a crosstip screwdriver. Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes per lamp.

Update on the bike. They did originally replace a fuse and relay. The original wiring diagram was wrong and they had to work through it trial and error. They also found that with my Springer, doing the wiring by following directions caused a wire to get pinched which is why nothing was working. They fixed it right away and apologized for the problem. Said they should have double checked it. Rerouted it on the fix to bypass the problem. Working great now.

Ya, i agree, i want to go back to 35 watt bulbs. BUT, i live in a small town, I checked the harley place in my town, they only have the 55 watt bulbs and they are the ones who put it in. I also checked NAPA, Checker, autozone, Kmart, wallmart, none of them carry it. I also checked the same stores in the next closest town, they don't carry it either. I just ordered 6 of them on line, hope to have them in a couple of weeks.
