Default stoplight switch?

what the hell is this stoplight switch that i have damaged? i tore the boot on it and im not sure what it is. its in the switch housing i took off and im not sure if i need it or if i need to get another one or something i can just let ride?

Its the switch that activates your tailight when applying your front brake. Yes, you need it.

i ripped the rubber boot when i was takin it apart tonight, so im guessin i need to replace the hole thing now?

nope, just replace the boot, or use a piece of shrink tubing and heat at each end. the idea is to keep the connection within the switch clean and dry.

Have you checked to make sure that the switch isn't broken? Those damned things snap easily. The brake operates on a reverse-cam design. When you grab the brake lever, one cam depresses the master cylinder to apply hydraulic pressure to the caliper pistons that apply the linings to the rotor. The other cam on the lever allows the switch to get longer, activating the brake light. If the tip of the switch shears off, your brake light will never shut off. The switch "button" is hollow. When I broke mine, I just used a tiny screw (like a #0000 or something) and threaded it into the button. Nearly 8,000 miles and no problems. I just didn't feel like f***ing around with having to solder in a new switch.

Just double check that your brake light isn't stuck on.
