If you just replaced the cable the odds are good that its just not adjusted properly.
The book says to go through the entire clutch/cable adjustment.
But you can usually get away with just adjusting the cable at this point.
Back off on the cable adjusted (screw them together) until you can get about a dimes worth of slack in it and you should be fine.
That's not the 'best' way to do it because the dime should really be on the cable side of the housing.
But if you can slip a dime in between the lever and the housing that way, and its just loose enough to almost fall out on its own, you should be close enough.
