Default gas mileage

Ever since getting my 03 standard I have been disappointed in the gas mileage. I usually average around 35-36mpg commuting to work(35 miles each way). I was running late for work the other day and run it hard to make up time. When I fueled up I had only gotten 31mpg. It has a jet kit SE pipes and SE air filter. It was all on the bike when I bought it. I do notice it was running rich at idle, smells like fuel. Will that make an impact on mileage? I was going to adjust the air fuel mixture today but dont know if that will help.

I'm running Rush slip-ons with no tuning or intake changes. Get mid to high 40s and it runs great. Oh yea, this a 2009 Heritage. My brother runs SE pipes and intake on a 2006 Heritage with remap and his is about the same too.

I have an 04 standard with SE-II slip ons and not really sure what has been done with the intake. It looks like a K&N style filter and the plastic portion has been removed from the housing. Not sure about ECU, but it does run a little lean. I get about 45-47 on my 35 mile commute to work (all back roads, fair amount of shifting, not really any traffic or stopping). Just going out for an all day ride with the sissybar off I have gotten as high as 55 on rural farm roads in 5th gear doing 45 almost all day.

As far gas mileage goes I get about 40 with v&h pipes and a fuel tuner. most of it is going to work and back on a four lane and a couple of miles through town and 8 miles on a 2 lane. going to work is down hill while coming home is all up at average speed of 65-70 mph. thought i would get better mileage cause i'd heard of people getting 45-50. talked to friend and he gave me something to think about. at work i park in the sun for 8-9 hours. gas tank is vented and tank gets hot. gas evaporates and goes out vent. gas mileage is affected by loss due to evaporation. been laid off for a month bike is parked in the shade. better gas mileage.

I dont know what jets are in it now but at idle I have a strong smell of fuel. The mixture screw was turned 3 turns out. I adjusted it to 2 and 2 1/4 this morning and it skipped and ran rough all the way to work.
I also keep getting water dripping from the crank case vent in the airfilter. Sometimes water will drip from the bottom of the air filter. Dont know whats up with that.

Running too rich can really carbon up your motor, not a good condition.Might want to see about removing the jet kit and just do some other changes to the carb instead. Those kits are known to run too rich.Sometimes it is just wear to the brass parts as the kits are made of the good stuff like what Harley uses.
