I just got back from the Iron Horse Rodeo in RedLodge Montana. I got over 50 mpg quite a few times and averaged over 47. Not bad for a fatman. I have the V&H longshots and didnt scrape a pipe on twisties. Really impressed with my new Softail Deluxe. After having the SERT installed my mileage has jumped up from 40 and under. Amazing
Have you had your bike dynoed after working on it? Do you know what your air/fuel ratio is now?
There is the possibility that your present setup is way too lean, which will give you better mileage.
Tom
Absolutley NOT true! If the set up was "way too lean" as suggested above, your bike would have the following problems: surging at cruise speed, pinging under load, excessive heat at idle and cruise, a flat spot or bog off idle or upon throttle roll on and worst gas mileage. If you have even the slightest doubt, pull your spark plugs and take a look, if they are bone white you are too lean. It sounds to me like you are right on with your mixture. 50MPG is about the norm for your bike. My Heritage averages pretty close to the same on the road as yours. The best I ever got was 56MPG and I usually average 49. If your not having the drivability problems I stated, leave it alone and enjoy your ride.
WOW! I only get 30mpg on my 06 Heritage. I didn't think that was bad (The sticker only promised 35mpg & you usually don't get the sticker milage. You folks got me wondering now??? Now, in all honesty I've add a power commander, python3 slip on, and the SE stage 1 airfilter (with a K&N oiled element), but all that never made any real difference to what I was getting before it. I wonder if the fact that I live in the high desert (mojave) could have anything to do with it? What do you think?

clutch, I got some of my best mileage riding in you area. My last trip to Phoenix, last month, went through Bishop on 395 to 58 then to 40 through Needles. Average speed was 68mph and average mileage was 49mpg. '07 Heritage with S.E. II slip ons, S.E. A/C and Stage 1 download.
I have 06 SCREMIN EAGLE FAT BOY, but mostly city riding and when on highway I do ride on fast side 75,80 M.P.H. and around city streets I like to run thru gears and make a little noise with HEADER, but I only get 33 or 35 M.P.G.!! on my dyno I have nice straight air to fuel ratio, right on 13% but my bike is like the muscle cars of 60's & 70's and yes I have a HEAVY hand! I do not do smoking burn outs but I ride it to have fun and my rides or short 10 to 30 miles, but compared to my SRT-10 I'M getting great gas mileage, but if I slowed down and drove on highway at 65 I'M sure I would get better gas mileage, we better burn it while we can because in 10 years who knows what we will be riding. PURPLE HAZE.
And one more issue is living in big city D.F.W. all our gas for hundred miles around has 10% alcohol and that just evaporates with your gas it does not burn, it is supposed to keep our air cleaner, so you use and buy more gas! That really makes since! And the rich get richer and we get the shaft, but any way I hear in rural areas they are still supposed to sell 100% gas and not mix the corn extract in it, so 10% a gallon that is probably 2 or 3 miles gallon or more, but that is not my excuse for riding on high side, I just love to feel free and alive, and I ride fast when I can! I do not whip in and out of TRAFFIC like a nut! That I know we have all seen on there rice rockets.
I average 43mpg, and I'm a very spirited rider. I tried to find out what mympgwhen riding conservative, but that kinda riding only lasted about a half mile.
Not knocking your bike at ALL!! It looks like a well taken care of machine, but my bike is a C.V.O. kind of hot rod of the 06's and I do let her run! Can not help it, it wants to be rode fast, and is your gas that 10% alcohol they make us use in city? Even taking short trips and running thru the gears from light to light I get 32 to 35 but like I said I'M surronded by city and its stop and go and if there is a open place on highway that means RADAR cop in the grass, but bike runs GREAT! And I'M happy with milage and know I could get better if I drove slower. PURPLE HAZE.
