Default Sizing springer and raking front end

I pulled the trigger last night on adding 5 degrees of rake to the neck of my 2005 FXST. I am about to order a springer for it and am not sure what size. I want it to be 4" longer than what I have right now. It measures 24" from the bottom of the trees to the center of the axle.

Are stock springer front ends the same length as mine? Or are they shorter. What is the plus or minus measurement based on? I am not sure but I always thought springers were minus 2" from mine. could be wrong though. I need one that measures 28" from the bottom of the trees to the center of the axle.

Springers are based off the stock softail dimensions now. The FX springer is what you are looking at for stock length. An FL springer is 2" under. So, ordering a 4" over springer is what you are looking for. I believe it may be a little long for your application tho, unless you stretched the downtubes of the frame also. For my 40 degree neck and 1" stretched downtube frame, everyone was telling me 2 to 3" over would be perfect.

I have learned that ordering a bit long is better than short. If it is too long you can flip the rockers and drop it a bit.

You may want to check out RB Racing Rake and Trail Calculator or you can download a rake & trail calculator from Motorcycle Metal.

Thanks for the help, I did order the +4 black springer the other day. THe neck is chopped and set at a +5 degree rake. Zero up and Zero out. It should look like it is in proportion with the bike. I really dont want it to look out of place or strange like some I have seen in the past. I did use the rake calculator before even chopping the neck to see where the trail would be. I am going to put 4-6" risers with a set of 10-12" apes on it.

I also chopped the forward controls and extended them 2" forward and 2" outward at an angel so they keep your feet on the pegs. It made a huge difference in the comfort of my legs. I wont have to bend my legs much.

The front end will be in on thursday. I will post some pics once I have it on.
