I don't believe there's any difference between '07 and '08. My '07 Softail Custom doesn't make any noise in 5th gear. I paid $11K for my bike, which was a bank repo with 460 miles.
There are a few changes made between the 2007 and 2008 softails.
In 2008 the rear wheel was centered whereas previous years it was offset
There were some modifications made to the battery tray area, if I remember
Also, there were some changes made to the gas tank internals
This is all from memory of a previous thread on this board covering the same subject (2007 to 2008 changes). I'll take the bike with the updates when looking at used bikes.
5th gear whine is very subjective; regardless, the 2010 bikes now have a different cut on the 5th gear from the 2007 - 2009 bikes
eh, the rear wheel was not centered on any of the 08's that i've seen. however, the front wheel on the fatboy was centered in 08, something that it was apparently lacking in 07. Even the 2010 softails seem to have off centered rear wheels. Take a look at the rear pic of the 2010 deluxe on the harley website. as off center as it can get!
