Default Fatboy Transformation

Haven't posted in a while since not much was new. Anyway...Bit the bullet over the winter and making major mods to my '01 Fatboy.

Here's what's going on:

1) Powdercoat the frame to a slightly darker yellow (Carolina Custom Powdercoating, Cary NC)
2) New Kustomwerks front fender
3) Paint by Attitude Custom Painting in Tampa
4) Spun polished Centerlines
5) Chrome front end stuff
6) Headwinds 5 3/4 headlamp (got a deal on eBay just to see what it looks like)
7) Paughco built a Twincam hidden axle swingarm
8) Frenched turnsignals in the fender struts (BMW side markers)
9) Other minor crap

Overall, going well. Always takes longer than you'd expect. Attitude was right on in their 5 week turnaround, however. Frame coating took 3 days. Fantastic job. Way richer than the factory black. Powdered the calipers the same yellow.

I'll post more as stuff comes together.

Before image is attached.

Work on the rear turn signals.

Got take-offs from Ray Price's used bin here in Raleigh. Milled out spots for the BMW markers. Got a set that has wide-angle LEDs in them. Didn't mess with any mountings in the fender in case I don't like the look. There's a thread from about 3 years ago that talks about my using Deuce (narrow bracked) signals. I can easily switch back to those if this "slims" down the rear end too much.

Pics suck a little because I screwed up my exposure.

Frame Stuff

Wow. I was a bit worried about doing this. Sure. Massive undertaking to strip everything down completely - but since (I think I'm smart) and not tearing into the engine at the same time, there are fewer variables to bit me in the *** as I go through assembly.

They dipped the frame to remove the old coating. I also coated the floorboard brackets, exhaust bracket, and transmission brackets.

The yellow looks brighter in the images because there's no flash and the flourescents cause a bit of overexposure. Basically it's the just a shade darker than the factory color

Tins as a work-in-progress

Got these from Scott at Attitude (www.customflamepainting.com) today. Needs clear on them. But fantastic work. Colormatched to the powdercoating on the frame. Orange on the tribals.

I didn't want an airbrushed emblem, nor the crappy decal. Instead, I went with the 2010 Fatboy Low badge. Tried to get the embossed badge from the '90's MooGlides - found a left-side one for $350. Nope. It's not a restricted part so you can just grab them from the parts catalog.

Another thing on rear fender struts

A lot of people go off on quest to lower their bikes - myself included. There are all sorts of schools of thought on if it's a good thing or not especially when it comes to ride quality. But, here's the deal. If you're going to paint your bike - and especially if it's a Heritage or Fatboy. Buy the Klockworks fender in the "builders" version. It's undrilled. Then, you can mount it nearly 1.5" lower in the struts than the factory position.

You can go that low with the fender and still have 3/8" before you hit the stops. I've got another custom fender that I didn't use (because it takes away the Fatboy look) and had it slammed without messing with the suspension.

Now, what this does mess up is the seat. But if you're already in this deep...

Just a thought...

Nice job man, I am partial to denim black bikes but that bike is going to be sick when it is finished.
