Tailight Conversion/Assembly...Questions
I am looking at removing that honking tailing from the end of my CrossBones. So, to do this, I've been looking at relocating my license plate to a side-mounted frame. However, with this, I am not sure if many of the frames I've been looking at have lighting or not. Also, I'm not sure if it is the law to have my license plate lit? I know I've seen several bikers around here running around with unlit plates, but then again, they may try to limit their night riding to a minimum...
Onward to the more serious issue here:
I'm wanting to change my turn signals to function as both turn signals and brake lights. I was told by my local dealership that I'd have to purchase a taillight conversion kit for about $70. That would include red lamp covers (to change out the amber ones), new bulbs, and a new wiring harness so that a signal can be sent to the turn signals to function as a brake in addition to signaling.
My main question(s) is this: Is this right? I want to make sure I do this correctly, but am also unsure whether I am getting scammed by the company? Well, I'm sure it isn't a scam...I just don't want more or less than I need. And, how difficult is this to install. I will be honest and say that I am not the most mechanically inclined individual, but I want to work on my own bike myself...though, I am not opposed to having help. I just want to be involved.
If anybody has any tips/suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Hey Doc,
I'm going to be relocating my plate soon. There are many ways to do it, but the two main ways are an axle bolt placement and a primary placement.
I will be going with an axle bolt plate from www.demonscycle.com. The light is LED as is the light for the plate. I would imagine most states require your plate to be lit. Also, if you want a combo-style set up, you'll need a harness to change the voltage. I have one (Badlands) if you need it.

Why would you be getting rid of the harness? Decided you didn't like that set-up?
I guess my primary concern with moving the plate would be getting the wiring to it. For instance, if I mount to the swingarm or to the rear axle nut, how would I get the electrical wiring to it to light the led? For the frame, I'd rather it light the plate only...no other lighting for me. So, unless they make some with batteries...I'm at a little bit of a loss...
Again, I haven't done anything like this, so the plate seems a bit awkard in getting wires to it all the way out there...

Take a look at this - this is the touring rear sig bar on a Heritage. I also installed the conversion kit, $59. Both are a piece of cake to install - the test is, if I can install it, a moron can because a moron did.
I can send the part numbers in a few minutes.

Not sure about the side mounts being legal or not in some states, however I know that vertical mount plates are illegal in some states. I was gonna install a vertical mount plate till I found out it was illegal in ND. Just an excuse to get pulled over imo.
Best to just call your DMV and ask them directly.
