Default UPGRADE truths???

Just got a new fat boy. Ordered VH pipes (2 into 2) and they will be here Monday. Now I am really confused on this...
I spoke with four dealers and got four different answers. I just want to put on pipes and an air cleaner (no cams-heads) I am being told I need to do a download from one dealer. Another tells me a down load is not enough and another wanted to do a $600.00 chip and other stuff.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO just for pipes and air cleaner?
I was also told I could drive my bike to the dealer for the download, drive home and do the pipes and ac at home and it will not affect my warranty to save on labor. If anyone knows what need to be done can you let me know.

What air cleaner?

I switched from V & H straight shots to V & H 2 into 2 this winter and mine ran way lean. Tweaked the PC III map and all is good now. If I just bought a new bike I would not chance it. If you can't find a good tuner in your area, call Fuel Moto, get some kind of fuel management on that thing. Your bike will thank you for it.

Even if you left your bike stock, you should do some type of fuel management. The bikes run lean due to EPA regs. Skip the dealer, call Jaimie at Fuel Moto tell him what ya got for intake and pipes and he'll hook ya up.

If you are doing an air cleaner you need to do either a download or a tuner. The download is pretty much useless so get a tuner. IF you are getting it done at a dealer they will tell you to get the Harley tuner or else it will void your warranty.

Congrats on new pipes bud.

I put V&H pipes and air cleaner on my bike that was stock from dealer a couple years ago.
You need some way to manage more fuel and since there's different ways to do it, you get different answers.

The dealers are going to push the HD stuff, and I'm no pro on it myself, but the download is to richen your factory ecm. You could also buy a fuel management system from HD (SERT race tuner), or go aftermarket.

Personnally, I've got a PCIII (power commander) I picked up on craigslist and works like a champ.

Lots of folks here like Fuel moto for power commander stuff, but if you're never going to do any internal work (most of us dont), any fueler will work even the V&H fuelpak.

Some are more adjustable, some are auto adjusting, some cheap, some definetly not...

Getting it dyno'd after you get a fueler is gravy. You should without a doubt get something so you dont run lean.

Cheers!

The Dealer Download will be enough. Bought my bike used and it had the download. It will still be on the leaner side but it will not hurt the bike. It is the easiest to deal with and costs only ~$150. You can do the download then install your pipes and cleaner and HD will warranty your bike - no headaches or worries. Not trying to talk you into the download, just pointing out it does have its advantages.

Theirs also the PC, Fuel Pak, Techlusion DFO/TFI, TTS Mastertune, Thundermax... and the $600 chip, SEST, the one dealer mentioned which also requires a $200 dyno tune. Research the TTS for $425. It will do what the $600 chip and $200 dyno tune will for a lot less money. Chances are you will be wanting to add cams, or change out pipes, or big bore kit one day. TTS is future proof and "you" will be able to tune the engine again for all those changes.

So , do you have it all figured out yet ? LOL ! Here's an idea.... Just change the pipes , and let the a/c alone . Then spend a month coming back here , and read up on the various types of fuel adjustment devices . Take your time . Then decide which way you think is best . If you don't open up you intake with a new air cleaner , you wont be running any leaner . Plus , your bike's ECM will adjust some .

Went to FUEL MOTO and it looks like the way to go. I will call them and see but it saves on HD labor alone. Thanks for the heads up.
