2002 was the last year of the forged flywheels and Timken tapered bearings on the sprocket shaft, so it has a better low end than a new one. Personally, I have an '02 Fat Boy with a pretty hot 95" motor and S.E. six speed. I much prefer a carb. I run a 45 Mikuni but used to run the stock C.V. If you do any modifications to a F.I. bike it needs to be dynoed. To get them to run right you really need to spend the money for a tuner. Then every time you change something as simple as exhaust and air cleaner it needs to be re tuned. With a carb simply turning the idle screw will usually get it in the ballpark. Jets are cheap and simple to change. As far as starting when cold, simply pull out the enrichener (choke) and twist the throttlle a couple of times. It'll start right up. Letting your bike idle for a minute or two is the proper way to ride anyway. It lets the oil circulate before putting stress on the engines internals. The F.I. guys say they can ride right off. They can, but they aren't doing the motor any favors. With over 20,000 miles I'd check the cam chain tensioners. Better plan, get gear drives or the new hydraulic tensioner set up, and ride the best, most reliable, Softail money can buy.

I miss the simplicity of a carb. No black box (or fuel pump) was needed.
