Default Oil Change 2007 Train

Complete newbie here...I mean new to this bike.
Anyway, can anybody PLEASE either link me to a "how to for dummies" or just tell me how to change the oil?
I spoke with 3 people and got 3 different answers.

I just need to know:
How many plugs am I draining.
General location..if it's more than one.
And does it all the new oil get poured into the oil bag?
Does the derby cover have to come off?
I looked under the bike, and I see two.

The dealer told me I can use HD synthetic for everything, so I got 5 qts and ready to go.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

I would strongly suggest buying the manual that corresponds with your specific model bike. You can buy one from the dealer.

Ditto on the manual. A huge help for basic maintenance.

+1 on the manual...gotta have one. Also agree on the use of gear oil for tans/primary and engine (nothin' wrong with synthetic) for the motor. The dealer has nifty oil change tools for the engine oil (filter removal and oil catcher) and for the primary. If you are contemplating switching to synthetic (recommended) select the oil carefully. Once you have selected an oil, it is recommended that you stick with that particular brand. So, chose something that you are likely to have access to in the future. I went with the HD oil for that reason...not that it's the best oil available but rather that I know I can get the same stuff...all over North America. Good luck and welcome aboard!

Really good website..Thanks!

I guess the proper question to ask, is how do I replace the tranny fluid as well.
I was really hesitant about asking this question, because it seems like every search I did (on this and other HD fourms, usually ends up with "you should buy a manual'.

I'm not buying a manual....I may borrow one...but I'm not buying one.

I will try to explain without the use of pics.

1. First thing is ride it aroud a bit to get the tranny nice and warm, makes the fluid come out faster.

2. Drain plug is on the bottom of the transmission. You will find the drain plug by looking between the two shocks, its a little hard to see unless you have a bike lift.
Pop the plug out, let it drain.

3. Re-install the plug when empty.

4. Re-fill tranny with one quart of gear oil of your choice. Fill plug is on the top of the transmission on the right side. If you look below the oil tank you will see a chrome plated plug about the size of a quarter with a 3/8 hex socket on the top of the tranny. Remove that and pour in the quart. This plug also has the dipstick attached to it.

As said above, on Dudeworld.com you will find how to change oil in all three.
Why not buy a manual? Pays for itself in no time.

The Dudeworld shows a 05 model, mine is a 07.
The 05 has an inspection cover you can fill the primary with, the 07 does not. I just removed the derby cover and filled it that way.

Without the dudeworld link (and laptop) I would have been lost.

Did all three last night. Other than being a little messy, it's a very easy task.

Now I'm waiting on my lowering kit and Martin Brothers Shockwave pipes to arrive.

More questions coming I'm sure.
