I was really hesitant about asking this question, because it seems like every search I did (on this and other HD fourms, usually ends up with "you should buy a manual'.

I'm not buying a manual....I may borrow one...but I'm not buying one.

I think with this attitude you should have all your service work preformed by your local dealer.

. Trust me bro, when I first began my journey working on my train I asked fellow members the same question. Got the same answer, but to my avail it was 100 percent worth it especially when you get into more complicated **** which I'm about to. Props to members for sound advice.

A friend who builds houses once said everyone thinks they are a damn builder.....said don't forget a mechanic and a electrician... Know what I mean? I love my manual and I'm a professional tech, and no way in hell would I ever loan it out. Good resource it's impossible to remember every spec about a bike. But what the hell just hack it..... lol

I'm actually surprised that people don't share information on here. I thought that was the purpose of these boards. Instead, we just bash the guy for not buying a manual. I could understand if he was rebuilding an engine, but he's only asking for help on an oil change..... guess bikers aren't so close after all........

i have saved so much money and problems because i bought the manual. i would think that this advise would be considered helpful and advantageous for anyone that does any of their own work.

here is a reprint from the Harley manual...... oh darn that is against the copy write law

Are you kind of blind or do you just not read well. He got the info he needed and got the job done. Go back and read a little slower, it'll help.

are you changing all 3 fluids or just engine oil? did you get your oil filter?? do you have a filter wrench to undo filter??(cheap)
if your just doing engine oil, warm bike up to make oil flow more freely you only have to undo one bolt under the frame to drain oil,and undo oil filter after draining engine oil,
nb: there are two bolts under the frame, one for tranny, one for engine!the one between shocks is tranny, one on frame is engine, 5/8 sockets
for the tranny you drain it from the plug betwwen shocks,to fill you undo the allen cap with a 3/8 allen wrench
for primary, make sure bike is level(chock the stand) drain primary, torx bit 40 plug at the back of primary case, can be underneath or on the side!
to fill it,remove primary inspection cover, torx 27 bit i think
fill till it gets bottom of the diaphragm spring, you will no it when you seeit

Hi guys....I know this thread is almost a year old...but I read slow! lol

Anyway, I want to change my engine oil, but, I want to do it the "scavenger purge" way, where you take your oil return line loose from the tank, fit a tube over it, and drain the old oil out of the scavenge area.

I've read how it's done...I've seen videos of it being done...the problem I am having is that, on my 2003 Night Train (first Harley for me ), I can get the oil return line loose from the oil tank, but, there doesn't seem to be enough room for me to move it over past the filler hole and put the drain tube on, so I can purge the system.

When I pull the return line back, it hits the rear exhaust pipe, which only gives me about 1/4 inch of room from the end of the return line to the surface of the oil tank.

I've tried pretty much everything I can think of, but there just isn't enough room, and I don't want to scrape my black wrinkle paint on the oil tank.

Is there some "trick" to moving the line that I'm just not seeing?

I've been riding since the Cushman Eagle was king...but this is my first Harley...and I love it! lol

I'd appreciate any tips anyone might have to get this done...I hate the idea of leaving dirty oil in there, since there's a good way to get it all out.

Thanks in advance for any help....and, I absolutely agree....BUY THE SERVICE MANUAL! LOL....
