1990 Softail Custom Questions
Team,
Last week I picked up a 1990 Softtail on a business trade. Overall, here is what I know about the bike:
1. Has "Hemi Design" heads
2. Has Andrews EV27 Cam
3. S&S "shorty" carb
4. Kuryakan air filter (the one with the butterfly valves)
5. Vance and Hines Pipes
Overall the bike is in pretty good shape for being over 20 years old. Minor problems include:
1. Squeaking rear brakes (pads replaced - problem solved)
2. Odometer and trip meter in speedo not working
3. needs new tires
4. May need new battery
Items I have planned to do include:
1. Oil Change
Modifications I would like to do are:
1. mount RH toolbox to match the LH one
2. Mount crossbones style sprung seat (HD has a adapter kit that will mount the seat)
3. Tach
4. Removal of "live to ride" stuff...not my style
5. Engine guard of some kind
6. newer headlight
7. the auxiliary lighing kit
Questions I have:
1. I don't know much about all the stuff the bike has (heads, cam). Are these pretty good?
2. Anyone mount the sprung seat?
3. Does anyone know how to mount footboards? I would like to have footboards in a similiar position to a crossbones. I have briefly looked online and haven't found much.
4. is there any other work that you all would recommend?
5. Any ideas on the Speedo? If I get a new one, how do I get the mileage set?
EDIT - forgot about another problem...the shifter. When I step on it sometimes to downshift the lever rotates on the axle. I have tightened the bolt yet it still happens.
