Unfortunately this is a common problem. Last one I did was an '06 Fat Boy and the shifter shaft was actually rusted. I wire wheeled it to get it shiny again and ran some light sand paper around the inside of the bore. After that, the shaft got slathered in waterproof wheel bearing grease and reinstalled with new O-rings. At least I know it won't happen again any time soon.
Well you all are awesome. I'm gonna fix her up at some point today. Just so I'm 100% of what we're all talking about, it's the post that the shifter pegs actually mount to, right? Take off the pegs and the shift lever and clean and grease, got it. Thanks you guys.

i use cable oil each time i wash the bike to oil the shifter lever and linkage and the shaft. i also check for rocks that may have fallen in the hole and have used forceps to remove them. 51,000 miles and running better than new. I also take the shifter pegs off once a year and clean them with rust remover spray and then oil them up too.
Pulled her apart, sanded the parts off, greased her up and put new seals on. All for free thanks to you guys. You all are the best. It was easy as hell too and she shifts better than the day I picked her up. I guess she just needed to get wet.
Had the same problem, I live in Guam so it gets very corrosive. A month or so after I bought the bike I had that problem... has happened every once in a while after that. I had the HD techs show me how to fix it (if your having the same problem) Disconnect your linkage from the shifter an unbolt the shifter... slide it off and clean out the plastic piece inside, clean seals and replace... they told me not to lube it up (that could b/c I am in Guam though.) Hope this helps
I rode from Dayton Ohio to Grand Rapids Mi, with it sticking in the up position. I had to up shift toe tap it down and upshift again. Repeat for every gear. Man that sucked, but I fixed her up when I got home, before I even unpacked.
Mine was doing the same, feared the spring had gone but it was this. Disassembled, cleaned and emeried, greased, reassembled, all good again. Thanks guys, awesome thread.
