Default Air Cleaner Oil Leak

While on a long trip I noticed oil steaming out my air filter. Its a 88 with carb. I pulled off the air filter and noticed that the oil is pouring out of the two rubber tubes. Does anyone know a fix for this?

It's blow by....A little is normal....

First thing to check is the oil level.....If it's too high it will go out the air cleaner

that typically means you have over filled the oil. clean it up make sure the oil level is correct and it probably wont happen again.

Fill the tank halfway on the dipstick as opposed to the top and this will minimize if not eliminate this issue.

If the above suggestions don't clear it up. Might be your umbrella valve(s) in the top of the heads not seating up anymore. Also with that type of filter design oil is drawn back into the carb area, make sure you clean out you air filter if its saturated. Might also look into a Dohrety PowerPacc type of setup also to re-route these lines and stop sucking oil back into motor.

if only on the high speed trip then maybe over fill but that would stop. umbrella valves could be dried out, oil could be foaming and you need to go better oil. if all is well a fix was to move the vents to a hose and drain under the bike. I had a sportster that did that but it was a defect where they forgot the return hole in the top cover

Are there kits for these sportsters that route the crank breather holes (inside the air filter area) to tubes that can be routed to near the ground? I understand that the Screaming Eagle air breather routes the breather holes back into the carb, but won't that foul the plugs after a while?

As far as how to check the oil level, it depends on what year bike you have. My 2005 oil level is checked while on the jiffy stand, as are all Softail models that came after mine. I don't know when they started to check the oil level with the bike on the jiffy stand, I think it was just a year or so before the 2005 models.
Good luck
Tom
