My J&M self amplified speakers have no trouble at 75 mph even with my Thunderheader. Is the music quality as good as with a full fairing? No. Did they cost less than 1/3 what a color matched stereo fairing would cost? Yes!
Like nearly everything else in the entire world, it all depends how much money you are willing to spend.
I just bought a $24 set-up off eBay. For the price I figure if they last the trip to northern New York and back, I could throw the whole thing away and still be ahead. http://cgi.ebay.com/Motorrad-Radio-F...item23070362df
I installed Unique Speakers on my Heritage and love it. I first had satalite radio then went to a small autotuning walkman style radio. Those speakers rock!! The are plenty load being 150 watts. Also paid around $325.00 with the sat radio a few years ago. Will go back to sat radio once I but a MC antena for the sat.
I installed a UniqCycle setup which we thought was good. We could hear it on the highway up to 120 kms, after that it depended on the song. I made up some speakers and found another amp and added that to the Uniq setup. Now we can hear it just fine at any speed we do. I feel the Uniq setup has a decent sound level though.

I used to run Sony speakers in all of my full face helmets with a walkman (back in the day) or an ipod. I don't even own a full face anymore, but it w3as fine as long as I cranked the volume up. I do earbuds with the half helmet sometimes, but I grow tired of putting them in and taking them out.
In my 3/4 Fulmer I have mounted some Sony blue tooth speakers so i can lsitedn to the Iphone. They work quite well, but I rarley wear the helmet as I feel like the great gazoo with it on! LOL...
