I just mounted mine on the tank bib with velcro as shown on the first post and it works beautifully.
I wanted to share a set of headphones/earbuds that I've used that are perfect for riding. They are made by a company called Zagg (I have no connection to this company)
They fit in my ear comfortably, sound amazing, and have a controll unit on the cord that allows you to change songs, control volume and answer your phone on an Iphone, Ipod, Blackberry. It's a safe way to control your music and while riding and adjust volume for different riding conditions all without taking your eyes off ot the road.
They're $80...which is a bummer for me since I just lost mine and have been using another pair (Sharper Image, SHP881PK...I paid $14 @ TJ Maxx)
(
that don't allow me to control the volume and don't sound as good. I was thrilled with the Zagg headphones and am trying to justify spending another $80.
I'm going to mount my phone on my extended dash with the 3m dual lock velcro for my new speakers that are getting installed tomorrow. I used to have a pouch and I would clip the phone into the pouch. It worked great, but with the new dash A new solution is needed.
say I am curious, when you mount the phone this way, how well does the GPS function work? (internal compass).
I have HD's pouch for iPhones that uses magnets to adhere to the tank, and they disturb the compass.
It never occurred to me that the magnets would affect the GPS. I can't imagine that there would be any problem using velcro. The tank isn't going to intefere with the reception. My concern would be looking down at the tank all the time for the directions

That's a good point. At the time I had my pouch made, I looked and didn't find a holder from HD. Since then, I've found the one you're talking about. Glad I got the custom one with velcro. Neither the slant of the tank nor the steel construction interferes in any way with the iPhone's GPS accuracy. I use CoPilot and MotionX Drive GPS Apps.
Regarding safety, once in awhile I will glance down. The screen stays on while using the GPS (which is not a problem for the battery since the iPhone is plugged into the electrical system), so it doesn't take long to see where I am. Most of the time, however, I just listen for the prompts through my earbuds.
The thing I use it most for is to play my iTunes.

Yeah I would only use it with headset which thankfully I have a Bluetooth system which works great. I have used it a while now as intercom as well as with my iphone to make calls, as well as to listen to music
