I have an '03 with the carb. Simpler to work on. Plenty of power for cruising down the road. Mine is not quite stock....Stage I with a V & H Pro pipe.

someone in this thread said that the 88 was smoother than their 96. I thought the 96 would be smoother being fuel injected and rubber mounted.

Whichever engine is good, slap some high lift cams (.575 +) and ported heads and you will be hauling some a$$

I had an '05 Fat Boy that was 88" and carb'd, and now I'm riding a 96" that is fuel injected. Comparing apples to apples, I was more impressed with the stock 88 over the stock 96. That being said, I don't know if it was because of the throttle by wire, the carb vs. fuel injection or what, but since I've put in cams the difference is like night and day. I've got my throttle response back, and it pulls like a freight train. But I still miss my 88" with a stage 1, that thing pulled pretty good too!

I'd look for the best deal for what you want and not worry about if it's an 88 or a 96. Both are good motors. Hell, the Evo was a good motor. If it's an 88 with high miles i'd have the tensioners checked out.
