Gas smell

Default Gas smell
After turning my ignition on and waiting for engine light to go off I can smell gas. I never noticed this before but could have been there . Is this normal ? This is my first HD and I have 4500 miles on it.

Nope... got a leak somewhere in the system. What kind of system do you have? FI or Carb? Etc.

Could be normal..... You shouldn't wait for the light to go out...... When you turn it on start it.......

Fuel inj. gas cap in place Thought you were to wait till engine light goes out
Don't see any sign of gas leaking from anywhere

On fuel injected models, yes wait for the light to go out and then start. Do you start it on sidestand or straight up position while seated on bike.

Whichever way you normally do, I would stand to the side, turn on the switch and start looking closely for possible leak.

Yea there could be a small leak or you could be smelling gas venting off under cap.
