Default proper windshield setup

I have a 05 fatboy with the H-D clear fatboy windshield. Its the screw on bracket type, not the clamp QD type. I have it set all the way up in an effort to send air over my head. I am 5'11" and my saddle is Mustang wide vintage touring ( really comfy btw). Above 65mph my head gets a bit of vibration. Not so much it hurts or anything like that but it does kinda mess with my vision a bit. If you add a cross or head wind it gets worse. My helmet is an Outlaw half w/visor removed.

Where should the wind hit me to reduce head rattles? Not sure if I should lower it or find another windshield. It seems if I lower it the rattle would be worse.

Any thoughts?

I have mine so that the top of the shield comes to just about my upper lip and wear a half helmet and it works well. Try raising it, if you can.Another thing is adjust the angle steeper to direct the air up higher. Other than that, lowers can also help. I have the National cycle 2 up switchblade detachable, if that helps you.

I have it set as steep( straight up) as it will go, also I adjusted the bolts to increase the height of the shield as well. The airflow at 60+mph is just barely touching the top of my head when not wearing my helmet. But once the lid is on, my head is a little taller and reacts to the airflow.

I wasn't sure if I should set the shield up to direct air at my throat or should it go over my head. Its my first windshield.

My guess is that you need a taller one. www.clearviewshields.com could cut you one or I have heard that you can get the glass from Memphis Shades that will fit HD mounts. First choice would be Memphis Shades. I went through the same thing, the first one I bought. For future reference, I cut a piece of cardboard with various heights marked off and then sat on the bike and found the height that put it at my upper lip. Since everyone is different height and different seats, I found this method to be pretty accurate. Just remember, shield starts one inch above headlight when measuring.

I just looked at the Memphis shades site.
My shield measures 17.25" from top of headlight cut out to top of glass, well plastic.

I thought it was a HD shield but now I'm not sure.

A shield should be low enough that you do not look directly through it IMO.

I can see over it just fine. I really think if it was an inch taller it would be okay. I am trying to think of a way to make that adjustment w/o jacking it up.

Makes me wonder about those little shields on sportster. Do they do any good? where is the air hitting the rider?

My Heritage windshield just about bisects my head when I sit up straight so I see over the shield. If I want to smoke behind the windscreen while on the move, then I slouch and I am behind the shield as I ride.

The little baby windscreen and fairing don't block wind like the big shield does and it's not designed for that. The little fairing is designed to push wind right into your chest and prop you up while you ride at freeway speeds so your wrists don't get tired so much.

6'1", long torso - no buffeting with shield. Even if I stand up a bit, no buffeting. Try keeping your legs/knees against the gas tank when going 60+ mph.

Ditto

that is my problem. When taking long highway rides I like to lean back and put my feet forward and that nearly pulls my helmet off with so much wind riding up my body. Lowers helped a lot.
