Took the bike to SD for only its second long distance ride. Several small things went wrong that I fixed on the side of the road. Here is what I need help with.
Just shy of 500 into the trip we were riding two up. I was getting on it pretty hard to catch the group we were with. High rpm shifing from 3rd to 4th I think and it popped into nuetral which it has done a time or two. I let out the clutch again and rear wheel was locked up. Slide for 50 plus feet skipping and sliding. Pull in clutch and glide to a stop. Still running and I turn it off. Go to start again and starter just clicks. Negative post on batter starts smoking. Will shift in and out of neutral (thank god as I pushed it a mile). Won't roll in gear.
Motor is 96 inch S & S with 100+hp. Belt drive with dry belt driver in primary. Don't know who made the tranny yet, starter was replaced last year but screams at me from time to time. Anyone have an idea or seen this happen? Sounds like maybe starter jack shaft stuck in primary, or starter went bad, or tranny locked up or both. Tranny does shift with clutch in but can't tell if it is going in all 5 gears. Plan on pulling the primary tonight and starting there. So far just did a lot of staring, cursing but did check tranny fluid and it has some and not metal shavings or discoloration. Ran great until this.
any ideas would be helpful. Oh yea and my butt was not made to ride a slammed sportser for more than 100 if found out.

I'd say you're on the right track with the starter/jack shaft being stuck. If you just replaced original primary with the dry belt, I'd say there is a good possibility the sleeve that mates the starter and jackshaft could have been installed backwards. Inside that sleeve is a snap-ring that is offset to one side. If it was installed backwards, the jackshaft would tend to want to engage with with the ring gear on the primary....and if that happened, who knows what kind of damage went on inside the primary. I would think you could have heard and unusual noise though...
Also...maybe the washer with the lock tab may have been reused and the tab got weak and broke, allowing the shaft bolt to work its way out.
But a 500 mi ride under those conditions, you are probably looking at starter/collar/jackshaft/drive replacement. The primary may have been damaged too.
well found the culprit. I would think the people who work for Ultra cycles would have taken better care when building this bike. But the more I wrench on it the more I come to realize that they built it from parts off the shelf what ever was left over.
The villain was loose bolt in the primary. Primo 2 inch belt primary. One of the bolts holding the inner primary to the case did not have a locking tab. Spun out and that was the big bang I heard earlier in the day. I stopped looked it over and got back on, thinking I kicked up a big *** rock or something. over 100 miles later it bounced just right and stuck between the starter jack shaft, belt and rear pulley. Rear belt was bunched up behind rear pulley. Ground the pulley down and took 10 minutes just to get the bolt out and all that was left of the belt. Good news easy fix even for me. Bad news the full kit is over $600 at dealer cost. So shopping around on the web seeing what i can get.

thanks rhillbilly. Think I found the parts. Primo provided me parts numbers and quoted me $400 for clutch basket, bearing and belt. Actually I was surprised that Ultra actually called me back and offered parts little over cost at about $351 plus shipping. Just need to come up with the cash.
