2011 Changes
GMan -
The AFR is 14.6 for the 96 engine - I don't know what it is for the other engines. That's about the same ratio as a car engine, but on a bike with the engine between your legs it gets pretty hot. I was surprised that they didn't offer the ability to turn off the rear cylinder through the throttle, like they do on the touring bikes.
I know about the 6th gear light on the dash, but the HD website indicated that the 2011 Softail line has an "auxiliary" indicator that tells what gear you're in (any gear, not just 6th) and also has the ability to display the engine RPMs (I assume it's part of the display that you cycle through for time, trip odometer, etc.).

It was the first thing I asked the stealer about and it only makes sense.....

I like the Orange Cross Bones color, I have always and feel that I will always like the cross bones sticker. That oil tank looks bland without anything. Maybe the xbones with the crossbones stickers will increase in value!!! haaaa The Fatboy on the other hand screams "I want your attention"
Thanks lencap. I think displaying every gear is a great idea and being able to read the rpm is good too. It'd be nice if they come out with a new lcd display for ours too. It's probably in there, just needs to be programed to show. 14.6 sound's like an AFR that you'd shoot for on a dyno. I guess they probably retune them down more toward 13/1. Some nice features on a great bike.
The Air Fuel Ratio is a function of how the Catalytic Converters operate. The EPA doesn't mandate any AFR . . . they specify the actual emissions. As long as you can meet those emissions levels, they don't much care how you do it. Using 3-Way Catalysts with an AFR between 14.5 and 14.9 to 1 pretty much lets you do anything you want with the engine. Which is good for performance and fuel economy. In any case H-D runs a considerably richer mixture than 14.5 to 14.9 to 1 at less than 5% and more than 50% Throttle.
I agree they are cool looking but at $29,599.00 they better be cool
There is a product, XiED, that is discussed on this forum that changes the AFR through a simple plug and play device. It takes the stock 14.6 ratio to 13.8. The claimed benefit is far better acceleration (if I remember something like 3.1 seconds from 4.6 on top gear roll on) and greatly reduced heat in stop and go traffic (claimed 25+ degree temperature drop).
The downside is significantly higher levels of pollution (but to be fair probably no worse than dyno tuning creates) and lower gas mileage (about 6-9% for the Softail).
Another downside is to install the unit you have to plug it into the existing wiring on the bike, and it's located in a VERY tight area under the oil tank. I'm not sure if I can get to it, but it's worth a try. If it doesn't work, it can easily be taken out.
Final warning - some people have noticed that they get error codes when the product is installed. The company acknowledges that this is possible, but suggests that the codes are insignificant and don't impact the ability to ride. They go as far as stating that Harley doesn't consider the codes significant and suggests that dealers just clear them without any further action needed.
Overall it seems worth a try for the $100 cost. Many have suggested that the parts for this can be ordered at Radio Shack and cost about $1. That may be true, but I'm not inclined to try it myself.
From most of the posts I've read people who use the XiED seem pretty pleased with it. I have no vested interest either way, just trying to get the bike to ride as well as it can.
By the way, someone suggested that the ability to capture the gear that you are riding in and the RPMs is probably programed into the bike's electronics. That seems like a very reasonable assumption. If anyone can figure out how to get it to display, I think all of us would like to know how to do it.
Thanks again for the feedback and posts - all are appreciated.
