Default Which helmet in Canada?

A few of my friends and I are taking off for Sturgis from Oregon on Saturday. We'll be taking the scenic route up thru Banff and Calgary. Just wondering if any Canadians on here can give me the heads up on the helmet situation in Canada. I think the law says DOT helmets, the same as here in Oregon. We never get bothered here for wearing just our skid lids. What do ya think, can I get across the border and not get hassled for my lid skid or should I go DOT approved?

I have an Arabic name, so I cross the border with DOT, I am in enough s..t as it is already LOL..

Seriously though, It all depends, in Ontario, they do not bother you much because they can lose in court, (many challenged cops to prove that the helmet is not DOT as long as it has a sticker, you can always claim that you did not know), but if they notice you have American numbers they may harass you feeling safe you are not coming back to challenge them in court.

DOT helmets are required by law in all of Canada.

I live in Calgary right outside of Banff and they aren't too bad. In the big cities they don't give a rats *** it's the little towns you have to worry about. I've never had a problem riding back into Canada without DOT but who knows, would hate to see u get screwed. I'd say if you make it through the border you'll be fine but you never know? Good luck and ride safe, let us know how u make out!

starting aug 1st all helmets MUST be DOT approved in canada period no excuses and ignorance wont help.you can get beanies now that are dot approved so there is no excuse for not having one..besides isnt your brain worth atleast $100.00 bucks..mine is priceless to me so i wear a full face in winter or rain or 3/4 the rest of the time.
i also read that they will be issuing tickets and confiscating the helmets so you will have to park the bike they can also impond it.

Well here's an update. I took a DOT helmet with me and wore it to cross the border. After I was in the country I switch to my beanie nd was not even looked at. I even asked a RCMP for directions and he said nothing about my helmet. On a side note DOT approved helmets in Canada are much smaller than here in th US. I looked at a couple helmets at the Cranbrook Harley dealer that were almost as small as my novelty helmet. They must have different guidelines for there DOT approval. In the US a helmet must have 1" of padding between your head and the helmet shell. The ones I looked at in Canada looked like they had less than a 1/2". If your looking for a super small DOT approved helmet look in Canada.

If you are going to be riding that far, doesn't it just make good sense to wear a DOT helmet for your own protection ? You will encounter a lot of idiot cagers in that amount of miles.
