Default Battery acid leaking

Has anyone had this problem before? I bought a used 2003 fatboy from my local Harley dealer and today after about 2 weeks of ownership I was messing around under the seat and noticed liquid on top and sides of the battery. I found the fuse block cover was melted and deteriorating as well as the wiring loom eaten through from the acid. I took the battery out to bring to the dealer and it turns out it was a Diehard. Anyways they are gonna take a look at the bike on Tuesday to make sure there was no more damage. Anyone else have this problem? I did end up purchasing a new Harley battery today in the meantime.

That much damage didn't happen in 2 weeks. Pressure them to pay for the battery and repairs. They ought to at least stand behind the sale for 30 days.

That's what I was thinking. There is also a lot of white dried acid/corrosion in the bottom of the battery holder.

If they won't, write a letter to the Better Business Bureau. If they are a stand up dealership you should not have any trouble. Speak to the owner if the sales person won't help.

tell them it was a safety issue and they should fix and pay it all. it is the Dealer reputation on the line.

Sounds like someone used a cheap, flooded lead-acid battery instead of an Absorbed Glass Mat. I would hope that the dealer would fix it, since they should have spotted the cheap-*** battery when they checked it (if they even did.) I only hope they won't hold you to the "No warranty, as is" condition.

Unfortunate for you but the dealership will probably not buying a replacement battery... Unless the battery has "failed" or unless there is a problem with the bikes charging system.

In the past, I had a Sportster that developed a leaking "Harley Brand Battery" but the dealership will not support a leaking battery... Nature of the beast like a flat tire, broken belt etc.

Default Battery

Albreave is correct. A liquid battery is not a substitute for a jell battery in a Softail. There is really no way to run the vent hose required for this battery plus it is in there on an angle already and not a good setup for a liquid battery or one not designed for it.
