To Thundermax or Not
I also have a TM and my bike runs great. A night & day improvement over stock. With it (and another HDF member's help) I was also able to work out the decel pop I was getting after I installed my after-market exhaust system. My speedometer does bug out, along with the signal auto-cancel, every once in awhile, but it's no big deal to me. I just cycle the ignition on my next stop or just ignore it and it always starts working again next time I fire 'er up. My bike runs so great, otherwise, that I don't let a little bug like this bother me.

I wish I had the same problem you guys have, and if I did it wouldn't bother me either to have to cycle the ignition every so often. In my case, ignition cycling had no effect. My indy had to connect up his computer to learn that the speedo calibration setting had changed to some bogus value and he had to reset it. It was more than just an annoyance. Two things happened. The speedo wouldn't go much over 30 mph (no real biggie) and the odometer registered one mile for every 1/10 mile of actual travel. Last Sunday my one hour ride covered over 400 miles. Now THAT bothered me. I'm sure glad that I wasn't very far from home!
Bought the TMax w/autotune about three months ago....spent 16 months and 4 dyno tunes at the HD dealer before the purchase with the HD SERT. In the course of my 30 year career I did this kind of program adjustments and thought I might even use the SERT myself and update the factory ECM...not! After buying the software and spending hours training myself I came to the conclusion the SERT has way to many table variables to possible work. I understood why the dealer and the entire staff who were factory trained couldn't get it right.....literally thousands of combinations. Only a self tune, wide band, closed loop system can take all those changing variables into consideration and adjust as they change. The TMax is expensive but one dyno and the SERT are about the same price and I don't care how good the tuner is they cannot adjust as well as a computer that is constantly monitoring changing conditions and updating the ECU!! Yes maybe for one set of conditions a good tuner would get a little more HP for a race but over all conditions it is no match, period. My bike runs much smoother regardless of conditions with the TMax!! It seems to even have a little more power than the dyno which was about 80hp last run. An individual can work with this system and make adjustments and set parameters for the autotune and the system does the fine tuning that is impossible under changing conditions without processor help. Get it and work with Zippers if needed for small glitches,( I have a few) and ride baby ride!

I could be wrong, but with an '01 you have the Magneti Marelli fuel injection system right? Make sure you get the right model of Thundermax. I don't know if there are different issues with the Magneti Marelli Thundermax than the Delphi Thundermax (which most people are running). Are you planning on getting the auto tune with it? If so you'll need to get the exhaust with O2 sensors.
I have had the TM autotune since 2008...I have no issues, my bike runs better and recommend it to any harley owner. Maybe i'm just lucky. I do visit the website from time to time and I have done one firmload upgrade. No issues, no problems.
To me, I'd rather have the speedo issue than to have to take my scooter to the dealer for adjustments and pay through the nose.
I was not very happy with my hog's performance until I installed this Tuner...
my $0.02

You can put the auto tune on bikes prior to '07, however, prior to '07 the bikes did not come with O2 sensors in the exhaust. The auto tune requires the sensors in the exhaust so you'd either have to get the bungs welded in to your existing pipes or buy pipes for an '07 or above bike.
