Default Is a Limited Edition paint set worth it?

I am in the market for a heritage softail classic to replace a non-HD. Unfortunately I am not impressed with the color choices. I want a two-tone, yet do not like the **** logo type swirl on the tank. I'm partial to blues, as in cool blue pearl/vivid black. However, I think the cool blue pearl looks cheap and uninteresting. If it was a more interesting color, I could possibly live with the swirl thing. I'm interested in a custom series, as it has the more traditional two tone styling. The current purple/vivid black, which I've seen in person, does not do anything for me. The apple green (with vivid black) seems ugly based on pics and samples I've seen. One option is to sit it out and see what HD does next year, 2012 (the wait may kill me). Another option is to pursue the limited series "indulgence." I'm really wondering if it is worth the extra $2,600.00, plus a dampening kit. The color seems right for me, but I'm not sure the paint scheme is worth it, based on small pics on the HD site. Any thoughts? By the way, I read one post that said the person was glad he wasn't in the market this year, because of the poor color choices. Well, I am. Thanks for any input.

If it were me, I would check into a custom painter, your dealer can probably steer you to someone.

Get exactly what you want, and probably for a lot less.

you can get your stock tins painted cheaper...and have the wow factor from a good painter....but then you gotta watch people from a distance walk up and gawk at your bike....but its not so bad i bet...lol

http://www.vividdragon.com/index.php Vivid Dragon does good work, I'm happy with mine. My brother is picking up a 2011 tomorrow. I don't like the paint either, it looks like a **** swoosh to me.

One downside of the radical paint schemes is that if you decide to do something to your bike, like... change the front fender, you can't. Maybe it's possible to get a painter to match the HD paint, but probably not in any cost effective way.

I'm happy with mine, but I bought used and didn't pay anything extra for the paint. The quality is top notch. However, it does limit what you can do with the bike.

It's your bike, do with it as you like.

That being said, HD custom paint is absolutely top shelf. You pay for what you get.

A good painter would have no problem with this. A Brother of mine has a 07 SE Dyna. He got both front and rear fenders replaced and you can't tell a difference.

I agree with the others about having it painted unless you can afford the paint set and the money you pay for it does not increase the value of your bike. At least not nearly as much as you paid for the set.

How about looking for a new 2010 left in stock that blue and silver combo is pretty sweet looking. (I might be a little biased toward that blue) Might save a little cash too.

I appreciate all input. To sum it up, for me and others, I still don't like the FLSTC 2011 color choices. I was disappointed to read one post that it may not increase the value of the bike to get a limited set. I would think it would help resale a little, even though it may be a net loss. In any case, i would hold onto the bike at least 5-10 years. I'm glad to read that HD limited paints sets are top quality. I am leaning towards a HD set. I looked at painters, including vivid dragon (VD). VD had some outstanding sets, topping what designs HD puts out. The price for most sets is equal to, or greater than, a HD set. My issue with an outside vendor is that I am not mechanically inclined. I would have to find someone qualified who could pull the parts properly, and maybe store the bike for awhile, and then install the new paint set, again, properly. If the painter was local, I could take the bike directly there. There's no custom painter close that I know of. The parts would have to be shipped back and forth. With HD, it would all be in house and the two year warranty would apply on a new bike. I may just go to the local dealer and see what kind of a quote they work up. If it's reasonable (ya, right), maybe I'll make a move on the indulgence set. By the way, I now really realize that if you scuff a limited paint set, you are screwed. I guess that's a risk you take. I would definitely get engine guards. Whenever I do get my FLSTC, I'll post it, whatever color scheme I end up getting. Be safe.
