I find myself using the heel shifter more than the toe. Once you get used to it, you wont want to go back to the toe.

After looking at some other posting here, I thought about an option to continue using the heel shifter:

If I move it a few teeth lower on the shaft I might just get it in a lower, more comfortable position for me to use it and hopefully it won't snag my pants.

Now that's worth trying as soon as I get home from work today.

When I rented a Road King, I didn't use the Heel at all except to nudge it back into neutral at a stop. Now that I own a Road King, I use it all the time to not mess up my boots too much. I thought I wouldn't like it, but I got used to it within a week.
Though, I might lower the rear and swap the front and rear position like described though to make more clearance.

Thumbs up Try the HarleyGoodies Floorboard Extensions

I just won these last week for my 2010 Deluxe and have ridden a few hundred miles now. It gives me more room on the boards for my feet to be away from the controls. The best part is my pants leg doesn’t get caught on the heel shifter anymore at all when I put my foot down at a stop. I was ready to take the heel shifter off even though I enjoy using it from time to time. Now I don’t have to.

Just my take on it.

Same here as well. Only takes one time almost falling over to yank the thing off. I've ridden dirt bikes my entire life. Wanted to try it and that lasted about a week. Other than keeping your toes looking pretty on your new boots, I don't see a reason for it.

As someone pointed out, I've seen guys literally smash and stomp the thing and then complain that HD makes crappy shifters and linkage!!! I got an idea....don't jump on it and it wont break! See people just smaking the bike into 1st as well! Unreal!

Same here...has happened at least 5 times... especially if I am wearing sneakers (shhhh) not boots.. I guess there is more loose pant to get hung.

I've got the cap to remove mine, but I can't get the screw to break free. The allen key keeps popping out and I'm afraid of rounding the screw out. Any tips on breaking it loose?

First thing that left my bike was the heel shifter. After hitting it 2 or 3 times by accident and it crowding my foot, I said goodbye with ZERO regrets. I got both the end cap plus the shaft cover...and while I was at it, I added the billet shift lever and toe thingy. The end cap is available separately if you don't want the chrome shaft cover. The bike is so much more comfortable now.

Heel/Toe Shifter Shaft Cover with Insert

Conceal the splined shifter shaft when you remove the heel shift lever. The kit includes a cover for the shaft end and an insert that conceals the casting and nylon spacer inboard of the shift lever. Manufactured from billet aluminum, these easy-to-install chrome plated covers are held in place with flush allen screws for a clean appearance.

IN-STORE PURCHASE ONLY Contact dealer for pricing and availability.

Fits '00-later FL SoftailŽ models equipped with heel/toe shift levers. Installation requires removal of heel shift lever.

MSRP US $26.95
