Took the heel shifter off about 20 years ago on my `89 FLSTC, after I had to replace the shifter shaft and lever on the transmission. I`m convinced that a lot of problems in this area are caused by stomping on the heel shifter.
Most don`t think they are doing it, but I have watched many riders getting ready to shift into the next higher gear, and their foot is hovering over the shift lever, ready to stomp...
Took mine off when my pant leg got hung up on it, and almost went down at a stop sign.
Glad to hear that your pants leg got hung up on it. Same here; and I thought it was just me. Now I am convinced it's time to take off my heel shifter too. Also find it very uncomfortable having to raise my leg up high to get on top of the darn thing. Gives me a leg spasm.
One of the reason I wanted to go from a Dyna to a Heritage was the floorboards and heel-toe shifter. Took me about a 1/2 hour to get used to it. I'm short so it helps me. I like it.
I got removed mine within a week of getting my bike. Always in the way. I guess it's the years of riding dirt bikes when I was younger that I just prefer to use the toe for up or down shifting. There's a $15.00 chrome piece from the dealership that goes over shaft when the heal shifter is removed.
