It's an easy swap, but you will need an old style gasket P/N 25416-99C. The newer models use an o-ring type gasket. Keep the bike on a jack so it's level too, to keep any oil from spilling.
Of course they would tell you to discard and replace. If you remove it gently you can most certainly reuse it. I swapped out my Derby for another and reused it - no problem. I have seen posts where others have said they've reused it a few times...
Its not an expensive item so I'm sure it won't break you to put a new one but you can make use of yours again if you so choose.

To make this easy to understand, a direct replacement OEM (original equipment) part will require the original 0-ring gasket. Any of Harley's accessory covers are flat on the back side and require an old-style flat gasket.
Hope that clears it up for you. It's a simple 5 min job on a softail, 10 min on a touring bike as they require removal of passenger floorboard first. I always discard the "chrome" screws and washers that come with the "made in china" accessory cover and re-install the OEM hardware. Just my 2 cents....
