I've had my V&H Black BR pipes for a little over a year and a half and they are badly corroded on both the actual head pipes and the shields up near the heads. The rear one is worse. I first noticed it starting as blueish blotches that appeared on the pipes after I rode in the rain, about a month after I bought them. It seemed to get worse with each time I rode in the rain or in wet conditions. Now I've noticed the actual rust coming through the ceramic coating. It's even more noticeable as I run my hand over it, and a mechanic has confirmed that, "yep, they're rusting", but added, "just repaint them and they'll be as good as new".
I didn't get these for the opportunity to pull them off and repaint them every year. I thought the ceramic coating would actually prevent corrosion just as well, if not better than chrome, given the added premium for black pipes. I'm going back to chrome and never doing black pipes again, although I do like the looks.
There was another guy about a month or so ago who complained here about his black pipes corroding, as well, although I think his were a different brand. Anybody else have this problem?
I had the black short shot staggered on my bike for almost 3 years.
Even in Okinawa where it rained every day, I never saw rust on the heat shields. I did pull the shields off every couple months and paint them with BBQ paint. They looked like new when I sold the bike.
Just pull them off, hit them with some steel wool, repaint, replace the clamps and stick them back on. Takes an hour.
or go to menards and in there wood stove/fireplace section they have black paint for wood stoves...just hit it with scotch pad spray and your probably golden for years it rated for up to 2000 *..worth a shot for 8 bucks...not hard to take the sheilds off and put back on maybe 10 min... perfect rainday job

by any chance is it gloss? may have given me an idea
Contact V&H and see what they have to say. They may send you some new heat shields. I'm not sure what the warranty is on their pipes. I've got the black short shots and no issues.
