I am thinking about bagging my fatboy...and want some opinions from you guys. there are several different options available and I am not sure if I will ike any of them. the first option is Harley hard bags painted vivid black with red pin striping to match my bike. Mount them with the Cycle Visions bagger tail. This is the most secure method of mounting hard bags on a softail, but this is pretty much a permanent setup. there is not a quick detach with this.
The second option is the Tsukayu patrol bags which come with their own mounting brackets that sit really close to the fender. The problem is that you can only put so much weight in them as they are not supported on the bottom in the back like with the bagger tail. They make a piece that connects them together but I hate the way it looks.
The third option is to keep things as they are and forget about it. Opinions?
I am in the same boat. This is what I have come up with so far. I have already put the fairing on and made a big deal about it having to be detachable. Since I put it on I only took it off to adjust the bars. Fell in love with the stereo and protection (keeps getting colder and colder here in WI). I may take it off during summer runs, but not sure. Since I put the fairing on I have been running with my bags on cause I did like the unbalanced look. I also found in having the bags on I have used them more and more.
Now for the question at hand. From my research and looking at the baggertail kit in person they do come off but have a feeling you may want to keep the bags on. It is only 6 bolts to drop the tail. I personally think the roadking leather bags look the best on a softail, and you can get them for a reasonable price. This seems like it is a more and more common conversion people are doing. Look at the Deluxe post today, that is a nice conversion. Sorry for the long post.
The best look that I have seen to date are the hard-leather Road King Custom bags adapted to fit the Fat Boy.
Someone on the forum here did it and it looked really good. Maybe someone knows some key words or the forum member that did it and we can dig that thread up.
