I have a 2009 Softail Custom. It developed an oil leak on the right side of the crankcase towards the back.
Dealer wants to split the case and reseal, complete teardown, not what I wanted to hear.
I cleaned the engine again with simple green and water, works really well.
Took the bike for a ride, leaking in same area, there are two pipe plugs on the right hand side of the crankcase.
It looks like it is coming from the pipe plug that is higher up and is closest to the frame underneath some wires and the brake line going to the rear brake.
No leaks from area where crankcase halves are sealed together.
Has anybody seen leaks in that area, any help will be greatly appreciated.
It is under warranty. The problem is, it is leaking from the pipe plug. Splitting the cases will not fix the issue.
I was wondering if anyone had a leak from that plug.
So from your description it is leaking from where the oil lines enter the crack case? Ask them to remove the oil lines and reinstall them and see if that fixes it.
It is leaking from a freeze plug at the bottom of right side half of the crankcase.
There are 2 freeze plugs on that side.
The leaking one is right above the rear brake line and some electrical wiring.
Did the dealer look at where it's leaking? Did you ask them if they really need to break open the cases to fix it? If they explained it to you, then let them fix it under warranty. If you're worried about a long term problem maybe it's a good time to look at buying the extended warranty even though many will say it's a waste of money.
are they freeze plugs (pressed in) or pipe plugs (threaded)? If they are pipe plugs, as stated in the OP, why not just wrench them out and wrap some teflon tape around them and put 'em back in?
The reason I am posting here is to find out if anybody has ever had one of the freeze plugs leak.
These freeze plugs are threaded.
The leak is minimal, no drops on the floor, the area is just wet.
Splitting the case means tearing down the bike and then the engine,
not something I want done if it is not necessary.
I will have this fixed under warranty no question.
If I was you, I would use this opportunity to do anything I want to do and save on labor of tearing the engine down (of course after you check with your dealer). just an idea !.
Think of the possibilities ? <frame work, engine top end work, cosmetics, cams, relocation kits of ignition/horns/yanking seat post, etc>.
