Could someone explain to me what the deflectors are and where they mount. And also what head buffeting really is. I also just purchased the Nostalgic standard for my wifes Deluxe. She is about 5'4" and the top of the shield comes about to the middle of her forehead, so she will definately be looking through it. I think I will stay with the standard height and we find it to tall we can always cut it down. Speaking of cutting it down can someone tell me what they used to cut theirs or did you have someone do it for you.
Thanks
The deflectors are chrome triangles that mount on your forks to the same bolts the shield bolts to. You can find them on the HD site, but not good pictures. IMO they look funky.

There are several posts on cutting it down try searching, if you can't find em I will look.. I tried many methods and ended up using a dremel with side cutting blade and router attachment. If you have a glass shop/plastic shop nearby, they might cut it for you for not too much money. Around me, nobody would cut it.

Cutting the windshield is no big deal, just be careful and take your time. I took a piece of posterboard and traced the shape of the stock windshield top on it. I covered the top foot or so of the windshield with masking tape and traced the new shape on the tape. Then I took a dremel tool with the small cutoff discs and carefully cut the windshield. I haven't even sanded the edge on mine yet and it looks ok. I was surprised how easily it was to cut. I have also installed the wind deflectors and highly recommend them. I used the HD deflectors, they have a different shape than some and I think that is why they are so effective. Some of the other brand deflectors look flat and may not work as well, but I haven't tried them.

trax,
I have the full size windshield and look through it at 5'7". I have no problems with head shake or buffeting. I really don't think the windshield flexes that much in crosswinds and the bike feels really stable all the time. I use a plastic cleaner that we use on aircraft windshields and it repels the water (like rain-x does for glass) I recommend the windshield.

Thanks for all the info guys................Hey Blue Rose; you changed up your pic in the sig block. Looks nice (I've been gone for a while). I'm 5'11.............will I look through or above the king size shield?????
Yeah it was about time I showed my bike with the mods....not sure the touring setup was what I really wanted but I like hubby in the picture If you look close you can see there is an extra pad on my backrest....took me forever to decide on how to get a bit more out of the backrest and have it look good (also took me 8 hours to make a freaking pillow on the sewing machine...hahahaha[&:]). It velcos on, and gave me that extra inch everyone has wanted.

As for "will I look through or above the king size shield?????" ....I'm 5'8" and did look through the sheild but I also have long legs (32 1/2 inc inseam) so my upper body may not be at the same height as yours. Don't remember hubby ever commenting but then he has never actually ridden my bike.

Hubby cut mine down....Since he's a handyman he did it in a way he asked not to recommend (you have to have some real skills with tools)...but he did say it was much easier then he imagined and took no time at all. Like Rhubarb said there are a couple of posts on how to do it.

I'm 5'4" and the top of my king size nostalgic windshield is about an inch lower than my eyes. No problem so far.

It was 49 degrees this morning and I was quite chilled on the way to work. I will be picking up the King Sized Nostalgic Windshield next weekend. Local dealer has a 20% off sale next weekend. I will only ride with it on when it's cold. I like the wind in the summertime.

Does anyone know the part number for the wind deflectors? I can't find one that Fits the Deluxe on the Harley Website.

To cut the windshield down, simply trace the top half on a piece of cardboard. Cut the cardboard out and trace it on the windshield where you want to cut. Be sure to tape the windshield or saw bottom (I did 2 cuts and used both methods). I cut mine with an orbital jigsaw and the finest tooth blade I could find. It cuts really easy and does not splinter. After my first cut I did a trial fit on the bike and decided to cut a little more. For the second cut, I taped the bottom of the saw with duct tape to prevent scratching the shield instead of putting on masking tape again. After all the cuts, I filed the edges with a couple different files an then smoothed the edges with 3 different grades of sand paper. One other thing is that for the first cut I took the windshield apart. This is not necessary and I left it assembled for the second cut.

The thing will scratch very easily so I used a piece of 3" thick soft foam to lay it on when I cut it. The whole job should not take more than an hour or two and anybody with simple hand tool skills can do it. Very easy job that made the windshield usable for me. I hate looking through a windshield...especially on curves. The material distorts your vision and I consider it unsafe...particularly when looking into the sun or at dusk or any other time that isn't ideal viewing conditions. Very hard to judge corners when looking through a windshield that distorts your vision. At Sturgis this year we were heading back to camp one night at dusk and it had been raining a little earlier and with the bugs, rain spots, dirt and distortion, I had a difficult time seeing the curves. I didn't use the windshield the rest of the week. I am 5' 11" but unless I sit straight up, the top edge was in my line of sight.

I have the big one also. Mine has the quick reliese clips. Works great, and makes it real easy to clean both sides.
