I know the helmet is a choice in your state, and I respect ones decision, but do you think his injuries would have been minimized if he was wearing one?
I would say no. reading his list of injuries, all of those (aside from possibly the skull fractures) sound like they would have happened even with a full face DOT/Snell helmet. He still would be just as broken up. Just the luck of the draw I guess. For reference, I am a helmet wearer, even when passing through non-helmet states.
I'm amazed how many riders in my area have had an accident over the last 4-5 years. Nobody killed but broken bones needing screws and titanium plates to put everything back together.
It is an extreme sport we do.
Even if you cover most of the dangers.
ie:
keep your bike in top shape
wear proper clothes
don't speed
don't drink
There is still nothing you can do about a fox running out in front of you. ...or a drunk running out from between parked cars. ( the drunk guy happened to me )
fyi...I hit the guy...bike went down..no dammage to me or my bike...the drunk guy had bruises. Police did not lay charges because there was nothing I could do to avoid that guy....still, it did 'spook' me for awhile.
But we continue to ride, because it's still worth it.
There are dangers. Cover the odds by practicing safe riding habits.
All the best to your uncle and all the people 'round him.
Thanks for posting. It's a good reminder for us all to ....
It sounds to me like the good Lord was already looking out for him. He definitely could have been injured worse. We'll be praying for a quick and complete recovery. If the horse bucks you, you gotta get back on
May the good Lord speed his recovery and let this remind us that all we need to do is let our mind wander for a second or two to find ourselves in a full body cast wondering WTF just happened.
I won't get into the helmet debate, its been done, lets just be glad that he will have the option to ride the Iron again.
