Default Wiring Questions

Just let me say thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to read through all this and answer any of my questions. My hope is that at least a couple you out there will get very excited to share your expertise with me. What ever you can do to help me navigate this is greatly appreciated.

I have a mid-90's to early 00's special construction softail. I got hit about a year ago and am just now getting around to putting everything back together. The part of the project I am currently working on is the headlight, turnlights and accesery lights.

Is the wiring for these on a closed circut like a set of xmas lights. I.e... if one is out they all are out? Here is why I ask.

I Have removed the rear turn lights and the wires are just haning.
I Have removed the front accesery lights and the the wires are juts hanging.
The front and reay fender lights are still in tact
As well is the brake light.

I just installed a new head lamp and when I turn on the ignition...no lights anywhere.

Do I have to have lighting hooked up to every wire in order for the systme to work properly?

I have trace wires all the way from the ignition to the lights (or where the lights will soon be) and there are no cut wires or anything that would lead me to believe that were not on target.

Would my bike have fuses that could potentially be blown? If so...where are they on a softail? Or since I am SC, where might they be?

Does anyone know where I can get some kind of wiring diagram?

I guess that is enough for now; I am sure that what you give me will keep me busy for a long time coming.

B.P.

Default RE: Wiring Questions

The lights aren't on a series circuit. If you have things hooked up properly, and no fuses are blown/breakers are tripped, then when you turn on the ignition to the correct position the lights should come on. But .... since you say this is a Special Construction bike, there is no way anyone can tell you what is going on, why it's going on, and what to do about it. You need a wiring diagram of your bike. Maybe you'll be lucky and it'll be wired like a stocker. Then you need to get a service manual with all the purdy diagrams in it. It might help to have a diagram from a stocker anyway, as it'll at least show you how things generally work. And you should be able to figure out what is going on on your bike, even if that means tracing all the wiring out, and making your own drawing. Other than that there are just way too many combinations of parts to tell you exactly where to look - different ignition switches, different turn signal modules or no module and an old flasher setup, different ignition systems, and so on.

No , as long as there is power and ground to each light , they will work as a stand alone. The signals will not blink without all the lights hooked up usually depending on the controller used in your bike.

have trace wires all the way from the ignition to the lights (or where the lights will soon be) and there are no cut wires or anything that would lead me to believe that were not on target.
Use a test lamp hooked to ground to test the power wire to each lamp to see if it has power when the ignition is on. Also check the fuses for that circuit.
Connect the lamp then to +12 volts and test the ground for each lamp if it is not a grounded lamp base.

Your witring on the spec. const. would probably be a bit different than the softail from HD.
Check out these diags, you may get some help from them
