Default Carb question

Ya, I know it may have been answered 10,000 times before...........Sigh

Ok, how do I tune my carb? I dont feel I'm getting full performance. Yes, I know, replace ports and jets, air cleaner and such. But how do I know WHAT ports and jets to put in?

Things I know for sure.

1-Stock pipes with crossover.
2-SE slip-ons (older ones if that matteres WITH baffles(bout 2"))
3-Previous owner ported and jetted it, but form what I've been reading, he wasnt close to any suggestions of what I have been seeing. He did a 45 slow jet and an 80 main jet. Said he knew what he was doing but I'm not so sure.

I just want to tune the carb for what I have presantly. No, I cant afford to take it to the dealer.

YES, I can do the work myself.

Thanks.

RG

PS!!! Almost forgot!!!

1998 FLSTF, spits and sputters randomly, nothing consistant, 91 or higher gas used always.

Plugs are whatever are required for a 98 flstf and the coil is original.

I was referring to the color of the plug(meaning the electrode). That will tell a lot about how it's firing.

Coils stock, ok.

Stock carb to? Either way you will have to see what jets the previous owner installed. Hard to tell you where to start w/o knowing more info.

Kehien cv carb benefits greatly from a "stage 1 kit "
consists of boring out the slide vacumn hole , different needle, and adjusting the idle mixture ..
pretty cheap ..about $20....gets rid of the cough ,spit, etc
does cost ya little on the gas milag , but who cares
