You'll need a lift ($75) and a service manual ($60). Spend the money on that--you'll use them over & over--not paying a dealer to do what you can do yourself. The parts manual is also very useful. Before beginning, be sure you have the proper tools for the job, including torque wrenches.

You say you are mechanically inclined then you will have no problems. Go to Harbour Frieght and buy yourself a jack... I think i paid $65.00 for mine. And dive right into it. SIMPLE TO DO!

IMO...
The only step i recommend is to have a extra hand when putting back in your axles... One person to hold the wheel and the other to install axle/spacers. (time saver)... DONE!

Thanks guys , I have all the tools Cant be any worse than the 16" apes i just put on . That was actually pretty easy .
Looking at the rear tire it looks like its pretty easy . Front looks like cake .
My samson longtails are already off the bike so the axle flip is in order .

Thanks to all for responding .

While there are many who flip the axle and never have any issues arrise from it,..... I am a firm believer in putting it back the way it was.

There is a reason that the factory puts them in that way, something to do with direction of the threads and rotation of the wheel.

Not looking for the mile long debate on the issue, just stating my opinion on the matter.

Get your lift. Then jack the bike up only inches from the floor. Makes it easier than being chest level. For wheel removal anyways. My extra hand is two 2x4's about 3 ft long. I use one as a pivot and lay the other under the wheel. Push down on the top 2x4 with my foot to take tension off the wheel and remove the axle. Then lower it down. Nice and easy! This methods comes in real handy when you do the install.

Good luck with it. If you can do the bars, you got this all day long.

You shouldn't need a strap

+1,, its $85 per at our dealer..... If U buy the tires there....

Our Indy will do a ride in with Ur tire for $60 per tire and with the money I saved buying tires on-line instead of at the dealer it almost paid for the install at the Indy vs the dealer price...
