Default Looking for help in all the right places

I want to replace the stock fork cover with a chrome version on a 07 Heritage classic. Obviously, the headlight and wiring harness have to be removed. Can the harness be disconnected from the headlight itself, or do you have to lift the fuel tank and disconnect the harness under the tank. Looked in the shop manual and either it does not show this process, or I am looking in the wrong section.

Thanks for any information. New to the soft tails, have had Road Kings for the past 7 years.

Looking through my copy of the 07 manual it would appear that you may in fact be stuck with lifting off the tank to get at the harness.
If you don't have the new parts they may come with instructions showing how to get it done. I just put the rear fender rack on my bike and the instructions for it were included and they were reasonably well written, and fairly straight forward, if a bit less complicated than your "problem".
Good Luck.

If I am not mistaken The tank must come off(it is just easier)and along both sides of the frame are the connectors for all of your front lights. They are a german made pin connector and come apart fairly easy and can be put back together just as easily.Easier than you think just make sure you drain all of the gasoline, when you take off the crossover hose it gets messy.

Thanks for the feedback. I was hoping for an easier (less hassle) means of doing it. While the tanks off, I might as well replace the throttle cables with the stainless version while I'm at it.

Thanks again

just cut them and reconnect them inside the headlight housing. that's what I did for my garage door opener. Works fine and ALOT easier.

Thats probably not a bad idea. A little solder, tape, or heatshrink and it's done. That's probably how a dealership would do it, and then charge you for taking the whole thing apart.

If you've been considering bars with internal wiring, that would be a good time as well for that.

Right you are, thats what I did on my Road King. And have the same intentions for the Heritage. Strange how replacing one piece of metal can turn into an all day project! Lets see! Ride the bike on my days off or tear it down. Perhaps I'll wait for a rainy day and do the whole front end including the chromed lowers. Problem is we don't have that many rain days in S. CA, at least not for another month or so.

We get enough crap weather here for some long winter projects.. Just not enough cash to blow on the bike to cover all the winter months. hehe So we just ride and freeze to death.

If you do want to cut and solder the lines here's a good place that will show you how to do it the right way. So it doesn't come back and bite you in the *** with problems later.

One tip is that if you can't find any of the adhesive lined shrink tubing. Just use the regular stuff. But before you use it steal some nail polish from the Mrs. or a GF and paint it over the joint. Pay particular attention to making sure the ends of the insulation is well covered. That way if any water does get in it won't migrate up the wire under the insulation and cause corrorion problems.
