I took mine off, washed it, then used black fabric die. Let it dry. Once dry, I sprayed it with the filter oil and reinstalled.

Got my air set up from fuel moto also. They use a K&N filter and mine was also a purple color. After a bit of ridding and a cleaning it is no longer purple.

That is my experience too.. I've been running K&N filters in different applications for years and the "red" only stays visible for a week or so.. It color is there to help you when you're oiling it.. You can see what area has been covered.
