Heres my 2 cents...

the 05-88 cu in. 5 speed carbed
the 07-96 cu in 6 speed FI

Not gonna lie the 05 will be faster than the 07, why you ask... Well the gear ratios are spread out more on the 07 which "stretches" the power of the 96. And the "6th gear" is only good for long hauls ont eh highway anyway.

My choice, would be the 05, carbed, 5 speed, 88 cu in bike

BETTER yet... find a 06, they made both FI and carbed that year. I just happened to get my hands on a FI one at a dealer. FXSTBI. The "I" stands fro injection. the carbed version is only FXSTB, I Have that as my license plate, pretty cool if you ask me : )

Only thing ill add is that the 200mm tire is cool, and does change the feel or the bike while turning. Other than that, its all looks.

good luck in any choice, either way, its still a night train. : )

Most harleys 2000 and newer are EFI... The difference in width between a 150mm and 200mm is 1.9"... Thats not a huge concern to me, im more worried about the reliability of the engines, i hate to spend alot of money fixing a new bike...

Funny thing with this thread everyone recommends one year or the other, because of the 200 wheel or carb v efi,or 6 v 5 speed trans, noone mentions the bigger engine, as an 88 06 n/train owner did Harleys waste their time increasing the size to 96.

The 05 nighttrain I was looking at is an EFI bike, let me clear that up. Im also not dealing with a carbed bike, i hate carbs way to much haha

Greetings,

I've had a 2008 FXSTB, which was the 96ci efi, 6 speed transmission and now I have a 2005 FXSTB carb'd bike. I prefer the 2005 a lot better. For whatever reason the seating position is better on the 2005 (both bikes are stock seats and bars) and yes, the 2005 seems to be faster even though it's got the same exhaust modification that my 2008 had. So, if I were choosing, go with the 2005.

I've also got a 05... Hell they came out with the 200mm in 06 and I was a little pissed... lol I would say it all depends on how you wanna build the bike??? If you're wanting a short fender like the heartland setup I would go for the 07 without a doubt.

And yes 05 had the option of Carbed or EFI... Even though I luv my 05 I would tell you to go with the 07.

I just bought an 07. Was looking @ other years also. Just like everyone say's both have plus's & minus's depending what you are into. Sit on them & ride them if you can & carfax them. Then enjoy.

really depends on what route you wanna go as far as personalization.. If you wanna do a bobber 05 all the way... But i do like the 96 6 speed better than the 88 5 speed...
