I picked up an 04 Heritage (FLSTCI) with 7k miles. It has the SE II pipes and the rest is stock. Now, I have heard that Harleys run lean, therefore hotter. Is it worth the money to have the dealer richen it up a bit?
If I put an aftermarket air filter in, lets say a KN, ( just a filter, not the stage one backplate etc.) will that allow too much air and have to have a tune? Damn, I am so confused and I havn't even gotten to ride it yet!
Thanks Tin Man. Have a few things to put on it, engine guard being #1. Now I think I should start saving for a tank of gas, could be like a mortgage payment by the time the weather breaks and warms up here!!
04 came in carb and Delphi EFI. First off, which is your bike? You can tell by looking on the inside of the air filter as a carb and throttle body look different. If you are not sure, look at your title. IF it has an I at the end of it it will be injected.
If you have a carb, all that will be needed is a rejet. If you have an EFI bike a tuner is recommended, especially when adding a hi flow filter. Once you determine what you have we can get more into detail. Also, if your bike is EFI, take the seat off and see if you have some sort of a tuning device, or if you know the previous owner or shop where the bike was serviced if it was serviced at a dealer call and find out what was done as there are several options for tuning an EFI bike that will show no exterior telltale signs.
I know it is EFI. (edited the original post) I really dont want to pay for a tune just to have a better quality air filter. Not really interested in increasing airflow, but more particulate filtering. It is still in storage so I cant look under the seat yet. Previous owner and dealer are unknown as it was a voluntary turn in by a guys wife to the credit union when he passed.
I am too old to try to mod my scoot to be the fastest, loudest, etc. (did that in my younger days, wish I could remember them!). Just want this ride to last. I see people on here with 80k on their bikes, and I want mine to last as long as I can get my leg over it to get in the saddle.
+ 1 for riding it a while before you start changing things. Lots of folks ride with nothing changed except slip-on pipes are are fine. The Heritage is a great bike - have fun getting to know yours.
So with pipes, and a different style air cleaner cover do you have to re-jet the carb, or is that more if you change to a more aggressive air cleaner? Have been looking at the ones that just cover the top (mesh type) of the air filter instead of the stock cover. Plan to ride for now, and slowly change things as I see something I like. As OP stated I think my first mod will be adding an engine guard.
