I have my tank for the the new tins I'll be painting soon. (still looking for a rear fender and then I can start) I was thinking about the console extension, currently I have a leather one with fatboy comcho- not my thing. I was looking at getting a new, chrome one but then started to wonder why I should use one at all? (after all these aren't split tanks anymore!)
I have been looking for pics of newer softails without them and haven't found any. Since I am going to have my tanks/fenders pinstriped I was thinking that area on the tank would be a great place to throw a little design.
Looks like all I need is to grind the seam and do a little light bodywork on it. How come more people don't do it, or do they and I just can't find pics?
If anyone has any pics of a painted tank, minus the extension please post them.

If there is no weld showing on the tank then I would ride mine without any panel.
Not sure if there is a weld on your new tins or not, but if I was getting different ones painted the weld would be dressed and no panel would be installed.
Hey aquaelvis.......if you're painting the tins and grinding welds off the tank, have someone grind off the fender rivets (will have to weld them on the inside) front and back. Then have them painted.....they look really good when it's finished. I'm not sure why HD doesn't use flush rivets and then paint so they don't show.
