Hi everyone
I am new to this forum so I hope I am posting this thread in the correct place, if Im not I appologize.
I have recently rebuilt my 1992 fatboy from the frame up and everything runs great, but I am having problems with shifting. I removed the transmission but did not rebuild it or take it apart because if was shifting fine before I pulled it out. I also installed a new Barnett scorpion clutch. The clutch seems to be working fine. My problems is that it will up shift with no problems but when I go to down shift it feels spongy and I have to press down then slightly lift it back up again then push down to get it to go into 3, 2, and first gear. I know that I have play in my shifter I need to replace the bushings I think but I dont know if this could actually be the problem.
I had a similiar issue issue as you and it turned out to be a dry bushing. So dry the spring wasnt able to bring the shifter back to its normal position, making me do the same thing, press down then slightly lift it back up again then push down to get it to allow me to shift down. Maybe thats your problem.
Thanks everyone for your responses/sugestions. The oil I am using is RevTech high performance oil in both my primary and transmission. I took apart the shifter today and the bushing is about .020" oversize compared to the shifter shaft. After reading your responses I took a look at the shaft again and it did look very dry. I would like to replace the bushing and washers etc in the shifter but I dont have a parts manual. I only have the harley repair manual and it doesnt show me any breakdown of the shifter, I also found a clymer style manual which showed me the breakdown of the set up but it didnt give me a part number or description of size, material, etc. Does any one know where I can download a parts manual for a 1992 fatboy for free or at least cheap, the harley dealers around here want anywhere from 60-80$ for it.
Thanks again everyone.
