I went with the V&H black slip ons.
Yep, totally different. They are in the mufflers on the FB. If you got slip ons, just look down the barrel of your stock mufflers.

The cat is located in the stock muffler.

Interesting. I never bothered to look in there until you mentioned it. Now, I am curious as to why there is a difference between the models though they are the same year. Either way, I guess it makes it a lot easier to remove the cats on the FB than what that guy went through with the Road King.

The larger the opening the more likely you will have problems with burps and backfires and need specific tuning.

I had a set of Rush 2.0s on my 07 SG and it was a pain to tune them with a Thundermax.

I added Rush slips ons with my Fat Boy Lo this week and specifically went with 1.75s given I have a the stock configuration - they sound great and are less likely to create the backfire problems the 2.0++ pipes do.

I am a bit confused. I could have sworn I read that the cats in the 2010 softails were before the muffler. They did this so people swapping with slip ons could not get rid of cats so easily. I must look again to confirm. Stay tuned.

Is that on all 2010 models? I had been researching for the last 40 minutes and all that I saw was people were saying the 2010's had the cat in the head pipe. Nothing was official though just opinion. Attached pic is from a thread here in HD forums. Link is same thread.

YES! The cats are in the mufflers.

I went with the Rush slip-ons and the 1.5 inch baffles. I like them a lot, not too loud but a decent rumble. Just what I was looking for.

I recommend Rush, super good people to deal with.

One of the posts on that same thread you linked to had more information... After reading that thread, I'll also probably just keep my stock exhaust stored for a rainy day if ever needed again. Luckly, this isn't one of the areas that smog motorcycles.

If you get ahold of a parts books, you can see the different mufflers listed by year. The 2006 has the cat in the touring mufflers, the 1995- 2005 and the 2007 does not. Part number 80463-06, entitled, Catalyst Equipped Fits '06 Touring Models. Screaming Eagles were not offered for 2006 except with a cat, but came back in 2007-2008 cat free when the EFI module was changed and the ox sensors added . In 2007 they were 50 state legal, but in 2008 the same mufflers are only 49 state legal.

In 2009 (California) and 2010 (all fifty states) rules got increasing strict, hence the cats are back.

Page numbers 540-542 in the 2008 parts book.

Other models (Dyna, softtails, sportys, etc) have their own mess of different mufflers as well.

Think that's confusing? You should see the different cam grinds each year to keep the EPA happy. The 2006's I believe, were the first cams without an overlap on the timing. Adding the Andrews 21's really livened up our motor, and I'd recommend them to anyone with an '06.
