Default Brake Lights

I have a problem with my rear brake light not lighting when I press my rear foot brake but it lights up when I press my rear hand brake. Anyone have any ideas to what may be the problem.

Thanks,

Jack

My guess would be the problem being at the foot brake assembly. Look down at the foot brake master cylinder and you should see a wire running from it. Check its connection, look for bad contacts, broken/warn wire or insulation, etc. Perhaps its the trigger itself though which would probably require a new part.

(sorry for the lack of technical jargon)

Unless you have done some serious replumbing of the brake lines there is no rear hand brake on any bike that I'm aware of (outside of the auto balance setup on some BMW's). The brake lever on the right had grip only operates the front caliper, while the foot pedel operates the rear brake. If you have a problem with the pedel use a VOM meter on it to see if its operting properly. If not replace it.
I believe its just a shorting switch, so you can also turn the ignition on and use a paper clip or something to short the wires to see if the light turns on, if it does its a good bet the switch is toast.

You are right! The rear brake light does not light up when I press the rear foot brake but does light when I press the front hand brake. I will check for lose wires and test the switch.

Thanks,

I think you missed the part where he said "The rear brake light does not light up when I press the rear foot brake but does light when I press the front hand brake."

Thanks,

I just put axle chrome covers and master cylinder chrome covers on this weekend. I like the bigger rear wheel on your '07 softail. That is a big improvement this year.

Nice bike you have there.
But did you figure out the brake light problem?
It wouldn't do to have some dumb cager ram you in the rear because he didn't know you were stopping.

Still trying to find the problem. I think it might be the switch to the rear foot brake. The brake light works when my front brake is pressed.
