Hey Tom, Got my 413's today and put them on after work...
The instructions said to turn the preload CCW to increase stiffness,,,
I backed them out 3 turns and the swingarm only moved about 1/4" when I
sit on the bike,,,felt real good going down the road... My Ultima shocks must of broke something awhile back.
Good Deal!! Glad it worked out. It is sometimes hard to keep early 80's Softails going due to the lack of aftermarket support. You will like the 413's they will last a long time.
Well I was so impressed with how much better this thing rode with the new 413's on the rear, I got a Burly Lowboy kit for the front end...
I can't believe how worn out the originals were for only 48K...
I only lowered the front an 1" and put back in 1 1/4" of preload,,,the original didn't have any spacer between the springs and cap but had about
1" of preload... This thing rides like a new bike now...
I have an 87 soft tail custom. It's now 2020 and these shocks that fit custom from 84-88 are nowhere to be found in the entire United States. They are on back order and out of stock. If anyone knows anyone in any place please let us know.
I tried the v factor shocks and they are not good if you go over 45mph. Trampoline riding and dangerous. 2 up they will bottom out. I ended up replacing the swing arm with an 89-99 model. Small amount of custom shaving by my local Harley mechanic. Best thing I ever did.
