I'm in a love hate relationship with mine as well. Hate the way it looks - love the protection it provides. I always start the season without it. But sooner or later I put it on "just for the long ride". But once it's on, it doesn't seem to come off.

We'll see. I also bought a full face helmet for use this year. Again, hate the way they look and feel, but like the protection.

I gave up on shields when I got my Harley. If you want some wind protection get a roll bag and mount it on the bars. That is what I do for long trips sometimes.

send me a picture of your brackets.... I might be able to send you something to test out for me.

I am developing a new shield for the cross bones.

I'm with the OP. My Xbones came with a short, what I assume is a stock, HD windshield. I can't tell any difference with it on or off, so I have it off for now. Want to look at a bit taller and maybe wider shield to see if it will decrease buffeting. Also plan on narrow beach bars to see if that helps some. If not, I'll suck it up.

I would also like some input on what you think could change or be better for you.

I can custom design a flip up that wont distort but will let you use a shield below the eye line.

I agree with the wind under the shield theory. I have the tall shield on my bones and know the wind that causes the buffeting for me comes from under the shield. Memphis shades makes a windshield that you can put MS lowers on the bones. Thats my next move for long trips.

Default Fangs don't fit with detachable windshield

I'm 6', and having a hell of a time with buffeting at higher speeds. My glasses bump up and down so much that it's uncomfortable. My windshield is a HD king-size detachable. I look through the shield, which is not ideal, but you adjust. I've wondered if my helmet is catching the air coming up from under the windshield . . . .
I've read about fangs, so bought a pair, only to find that they are not compatible with the detachable windshield mounts. This never came up in the threads; I ride a Fatboy.
Honestly, the fairing is a pain for short rides, but is necessary for touring. Fat bars spread eagle you into the wind, which is athletic, but not relaxing.

I'm also in two minds, I prefer the look without it but prefer to ride with it, it gives great wind protection
